Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Thailand: Where to Go

Scuba Diving and Snorkeling in Thailand: Where to Go

EditorialJuly 03, 20264 min read

Thailand is one of the world's great and most affordable places to dive and snorkel, with warm, clear water, colorful reefs, and abundant marine life across both coasts. Whether you want to learn to dive cheaply, log world-class dives, or just snorkel off a beautiful beach, here's where to go and what to know.

Koh Tao — the place to learn

Koh Tao, a small island on the Gulf coast, is one of the cheapest and most popular places in the world to learn to scuba dive. It has a huge concentration of dive schools, calm conditions ideal for beginners, and affordable certification courses. If getting your diving certification is a goal, Koh Tao is the obvious choice — many travelers build a few days of their trip around it. It's also great for snorkeling and experienced divers, with plenty of accessible sites.

The Similan Islands — world-class diving

On the Andaman coast, the Similan Islands (reached from Phuket or Khao Lak) offer some of Thailand's best diving — pristine reefs, dramatic granite boulders, and the chance to see larger marine life. They're a protected national park with seasonal access (typically open in the dry season, roughly mid-October to mid-May, and closed during monsoon), so plan around that. Liveaboard trips and day trips both run; this is a bucket-list destination for serious divers.

Other top spots

Beyond the headliners, the Andaman coast around Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands has excellent diving and snorkeling among the limestone scenery, including spots like the King Cruiser wreck and Shark Point. Koh Lanta accesses the renowned Hin Daeng and Hin Muang dive sites. On the Gulf side, Koh Phangan and the waters around Koh Samui offer good diving and snorkeling, with Sail Rock a standout nearby site.

Snorkeling without diving

You don't need to dive to enjoy Thailand's underwater world. Excellent snorkeling is accessible on island-hopping boat trips throughout both coasts — Phi Phi, the Hong Islands, Ang Thong Marine Park, and countless reefs are reachable on day tours, with gear usually provided. For casual snorkelers, joining a boat trip is the easiest way to see colorful fish and coral without any certification or experience.

Seasons and conditions

Diving follows the coasts' opposite seasons. The Andaman coast (Similans, Phi Phi) is best in the dry season, roughly November to April, with the Similans closed in monsoon. The Gulf coast (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) is divable much of the year but best avoided in its wettest months around October to December. Visibility and conditions vary, so check seasonal advice for your chosen spot.

What you'll see underwater

Part of Thailand's appeal underwater is the sheer variety of life. On a typical dive or snorkel you might encounter colorful reef fish, clownfish among anemones, parrotfish, moray eels, and sea turtles, with the chance of bigger creatures — reef sharks, barracuda, and, at the right sites and seasons, whale sharks and manta rays, especially around the Similans. Coral gardens, dramatic granite swim-throughs on the Andaman side, and pinnacles like Sail Rock on the Gulf side give each region its own character. Even casual snorkelers floating over a shallow reef will see an astonishing amount of life, which is what makes Thailand such a rewarding place to get in the water at any level.

Tips for diving and snorkeling

Choose reputable dive operators with good safety records and certifications (it matters). Use reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on coral. Check your travel insurance covers diving, which some policies exclude or require an add-on for. Don't dive and fly within the recommended window before a flight. And book ahead for popular courses and Similan trips in peak season. Costs are low by global standards; check a live converter rather than a fixed figure:
